Your First Singing Lesson

You don’t need to be prepared.
You just need to show up.

There’s no audition to join my classes.

It’s completely normal to feel nervous the first time.
It’s also completely normal not to be.

Whatever you bring with you, that’s where we start.

My job isn’t to find mistakes.
My job is to find out how your voice works.

Questions

Do I need to practice first?

Short answer: no.

If you’d like to sing something you already know, that’s great. If you’re not sure what to sing, we’ll figure it out together.

You’re not coming to an exam.
You’re coming to a conversation about your voice.

Can everyone learn to sing in tune?

Short answer: yes – in the vast majority of cases.

It’s rarely about a lack of musicality, but about the interplay between ear, voice, body and brain. That’s why we don’t start with the ear, but with the body and the voice.

The Process

What happens?

No two lessons are alike — but the first one usually looks something like this:

  1. 1   We talk.
  2. 2   I listen to your voice.
  3. 3   We explore how it works.
  4. 4   We try a few things out.
Practical Info

What should I bring?

  • •   Yourself
  • •   Any sheet music, if you’d like
  • •   A water bottle

Voices develop best in a room
where there’s also room to smile.

With many singing teachers, I learn what I’m not allowed to do.
With Erik, I learn everything I am allowed to do.

You don’t need to impress me.

You don’t need to sing perfectly.

You just need to be curious.

See you soon.
